A loving heart is the beginning of all knowledge. Thomas Carlyle

The other side of the Rainbow

I won’t just hope
or wait for the day
when I can see your registry
and change my mind three times
over what present I want you both
to keep from me for years.

I won’t just hope
or wait for the day
when I can see you exchange rings
in that great hallway,
under that gentle canopy
or at the twilight moment on the beach.

I won’t just hope
or wait for the day
When you will sit beside me
in too small chairs under bad cafeteria lighting
as we clap for our children in hastily patched together
sea creature costumes or dressed up like pilgrims.

I don’t want to wait for the day
that I can visit your husband
but you have to wait in the hall.

I don’t want to wait for the day
when I would simply cry but you would
have to wait, instead searching out yet another document
proving you are who you have always been to your wife.

I won’t just hope
or wait. I’ll help them see that
You are not a mistake
You are beautiful

  1. I think I was a bit dense when I started reading this because it took me till the end to realize this was about same-sex marriage and that the narrator is addressing multiple persons…I spent way too much time trying to figure out the relationship between the narrator and the addressee…but oddly enough that made me like this all the more. I liked that I had this shifting image of who the narrator was and who the addressee and then when I realized…perfect. Very nice. 🙂

I’m really glad you said something about being confused. After I saw your comment I noticed the poem had uploaded strangely. The lack of separation makes it a little harder to understand. I was trying for the shift, but didn’t want it to be too hard!
