I’m not sure I can post anything even vaguely coherent tonight because…because…
Max Raabe und das Palast Orchester spielen in Austin Texas im Februar !!!
And dammit we are going. We ARE going!!James is going to buy a suit or maybe he should rent a tux?! and I’m going to wear a 20s dress that an ex roommate convinced me to buy (we didn’t part well, but that was a good decision). I’ve only worn that dress once before.
Oh I am SO excited. Their music sounds like the inside of my head (as does Jill Tracy and ok, the Tiger Lillies, but not MOST of the time)
How did I come by this info? well I got a kind response from the frightfully attractive pianist, Ian Wekwerth, and he sent a tour schedule. So we are planning as of NOW.
I’ve talked about Das (? my German is so many years out of date)Palast Orchester a number of times on here. Because they sound like the inside of my head on a great day. Yes, yes I just said that, but you have to realize for a person who used to be in a punk rock band or two and whose favorite bands were The Who, The Psychedelic Furs, Siouxsie and the Banshees and the Dead Kennedy’s this is ….well interesting to say the least.
How did THAT happen?
It actually makes sense if you know my history at all.
My dad sang songs to me from the 20s and 30s. He was much older than my mom. They were divorced when I was pretty young, but I remember him singing to me.
In high school I had a victrola. Yes a victrola. And I bought albums for it. In high school. I wonder if my mom still has that. I think I’m going to ask for it.
And when I taught myself to play the piano I got show tunes from the 20s through the 40s. And Cole Porter. Lots of Cole Porter.
And Bertold Brecht and Kurt Weill have been my favorites for well..since the first time I heard Mack the Knife in high school.
I took refuge in punk and goth because there wasn’t anything else. Not that I didn’t like it, of course I did, but it wasn’t exactly or fully *me*
But then there really isn’t anything that is exactly me. My music tastes are bizarre to say the least. I love bluegrass, hardcore punk, big band music, old school rock and many many flavors of goth.
But Palast Orchester—they take recent popular songs and swing them. They take swing music and swing it more. And do it stylishly, so stylishly.
Can you tell I’m excited?
I’m going to leave you with this:
oh and this one too:
